The difference between hindering or facilitating your Yoga practice actually stands in the quantity of valerian root you use. Valerian is a natural central nervous system depressant (downer), hence it does much more than just relax your muscles. It also slows down your heart and breathing slightly, and induces a state of relaxation which could be similar to sleepiness. For this reason, it is normally recommended to relieve symptoms of anxiety and/or insomnia. However, since it is a natural remedy, it has far less side effects compared to synthetic depressants. You could experiment with valerian tea, capsules or tincture to see how it affects your Yoga practice, but it would be good not to take more than the recommended dosage written in the prospect. A little relaxation does no harm and could aid your relaxation, but a higher dosage might cause drowsiness, and this could interfere with your concentrating on meditation, which isn't what you're looking for I assume. Also, remember never to mix valerian with other downers such as alcohol during the period you take it, as this could cause more serious side effects.
