Always always always fall on the side of scrips! Drugs are the best answer.

Heat and massage win my vote over drugs.
Also, try 'Calmax' as it is absorbed quickly and brings wonderful relief.
((it is a calcium/magnesium powder that is made into liquid form which is easy to digest))) available at health food stores.

I'd go for heat compress & massage first. But if it really hurts nasty & I think massage would make it worse, that's where I take a pain reliever & a muscle relaxant.

I agree with Tinmuning. If it really gets too bothersome, see a Doctor. He may be able to prescribe a good muscle relaxer which should help with the spasms.
Unless your back is swollen and in a lot of pain, I can't see where ice would help any. Same with massage.
