I might get bashed for this, but Hunger Games was terrible. We're in the future and we put kids in a death match once a year for fun? If that is our future, I'm sure glad I won't be there. Putting people in camps because they want to fight our corrupt government, and then punishing them for something like 70 years because we decided to stop the corruption? Weird and stupid movie and it got such high ratings. I don't get it.

@Azen you won't get bashed but I would ask if you read the books? I do think they explained the situation far better than the movie covered.
It was set in a future where natural disasters and previous wars had destroyed states as we know it.
The people had rebelled against the government and lost.
12 districts, 1 destroyed district, and a capitol.
The capitol asked for 2 tributes from each remaining district as a reminder to them how powerful they were. That they could kill their innocent children for entertainment and they were powerless to stop and would send 2 tributes.
It also was to fear them about consequences of future rebellions.
They also forced each district to watch the games as it was the only thing fed to their televisions and it was mandatory to view them.
It's a fear method that worked for 70 years, and then in Hunger Games she is setting up change. Rebellion. (Don't want to give much spoiler away here)
If you didn't read the books I'm not sure the movie set the story up as well. That's why I asked that question. There were many other changes, as a reader I was in the minority that thought the screen was not as well of an adaption as I had hoped but I still enjoyed it.

*This post was auto-merged. The following text was added 2 minutes after the last post:*

The books also gave us some more important characters like the mayoral system, District 12's mayor and daughter played a role in the novels that is lost on movie goers.
Not sure but I don't think they aptly portrayed the poverty and slavish conditions in the districts or explained very well what each district was responsible for maintaining in the Captiol's lavish lifestyles either.
There was a lot of minor characters left out that helped explain the political climate.

That's what I thought of the story, it was just ok at best. The parts that were supposed to be funny were not in the least. Even my daughters just sat through the entire thing stone faced.

The Hunger Games looks like a mixture of the Running Man and Death Race 2000. Lame.

I read the books the week before the movie came out, decent movie, but of course the books are by far more detailed and you do lose a bit when you make a book into a movie, no matter what.....

Is anyone planning to watch 50 Shades of Gray if it is made into a movie?
I have not read that trilogy and can't dig up much interest unless it is given to me for free then I might waste time on them.
I find it funny so many of the book fans are ranting and raving no about the leads being played by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart though since that's sort of who the author based the 50 shades on.
Will 50 shades possibly be anything BUT porn? The only thing I have heard about the books is they introduce the girl in them to BDSM. I'm also curious how many idiots will take their 14 year old's to see it if they do the movie.

I'll probably be bashed for mentioning "The Rum Diary" but I was totally devastated by the viewing experience. I'm a fan of Johnny Depp's unorthodox roles and LOVE the works of Hunter S. Thompson (Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas) but I'm afraid this is yet another circumstance in which I've lost another 120 minutes of my precious life that could have been constructively spent elsewhere (and for a better cause).

    Fellow members/reviewers, please be gentle!

I haven't seen The Rum Diary yet.

I'm on a mission to expose my son to cult classics from the 80's/90's...I'm realizing they just aren't as funny now as they were when I was younger. Though I did love the new Footloose my kiddo is getting it - he looked at me and said now we had to rent the OLD Footloose and watch it

Yeah I saw The Rum Diary - it was a bit ramble-y - very HST. The story just isn't as good - and I'm a fan. I also missed the remake of Footloose and I was DEVASTED. So much that I forgot how to spell devastated.

I am so pumped - I just got tickets to see Snow White & The Huntsman this weekend. WHOOP!

I read the 50 Shades trilogy. It was pretty bad and pretty good - all at the same time. It's terribly repetitive which isn't entirely a bad thing. The writing is just bad. Somehow the experience of reading the books isn't bad - which is weird.

I would probably see the movie. SHOCKING, I know.

    @Demona

As much as I hate to admit it, I think it's an age thing. I cannot relate to nearly ANYTHING produced in Hollywood today (although an exceptional rarity exists) and it appears it's either for the all-mighty dollar, poorly scripted screenplays, or re-making classic films (poorly I might add) for today's generation. Seems they've long since run out of original ideas in film making. I remember the great ones from the 80's & 90's myself so I know from which you speak. It's only a matter of time before Paramount starts cashing in on remakes of John Hughes' classics like Ferris, Breakfast Club, etc. Such a shame!

@Quaalude I was really against the new Footloose but I found I liked it as well if not slightly better but they did a really nice job.
I am surprised the Ringwald films haven't been redone yet now that you mention it because they were bigger I thought than Footloose?
I think they take things a step or two further in today's films when you look back at the 80's stuff.

These days movies have been disappointing, I have seen many movies that I had very high expectation, but most of the movies didn't even entertain me.

Immortals, Rum Diary, Dark Shadows, Battleship, American Reunion.

Maybe I just don't like watching movies anymore?

My boyfriend mad me watch The Big Lebowski for the first time the other day. I HATED it! It was so boring

I also tried to watch, The Woman In Black. While it wasn't a total sucky movie, it was kind of boring in places and didn't really explain much. Had a few good jumping parts in it though.

The Big Lebowski is a cult classic. I'll admit it had to grow on me but I have grown to LOVE "The Dude".
