Clotrimazole (usually with betamethasone) is far more powerful. Tolnaftate may work on athlete's foot, but it won't touch ringworm. There are resistant strains of ringworm, too, that clotrimazole may struggle with. In that case ask for Naftin (a dermatologist may have samples); it's a new gel that knocked out a case my partner had that defied every other treatment. It's prescription, but off-the-shelf stuff is worthless for ringworm.
