Lupus Anticoagulant and Blood Thinners
I tested positive for Lupus Anticoagulant, and I will be trying to conceive in a couple of months by way of IUI. I've done some research on the Lupus Anticoagulant, and I've read in many places that women who have it carry a high risk for miscarriage, but blood thinners can help to prevent them. When I explained my fears to my hematologist, he told me that since I've never had a miscarriage before, he doesn't see the need to put me on blood thinners. But my point is, I've never even been pregnant before, so I don't know if I will have a problem or not!

In my opinion, since it will be a miracle if I can even GET pregnant through the IUI, why not take a blood thinner if it can help prevent a tragedy?? Most women don't even get tested for the Lupus Anticoagulant until after they've had a few miscarriages, so if anything it may be a blessing that I know I have it before I get pregnant! Any advice???

I had a co-worker who had two miscarriages, and then found out she had lupus anticoagulant or something similar (something cardio antibodies???). Doc put her on heparin every time she got pregnant, and she now has 3 darling children.

I'd ask the doc again if he would re-consider, and if not...then I'd get a second opinion. IUI's can be pricey, and the idea of getting pregnant and miscarrying due to something you already know is a problem is not the way I'd want to go.

Good luck to you!

I'm with you, I believe in preventative medicine. I strongly urge you to get a second opinion. Also, I'm assuming your IUIs will be through an RE, I would get his/her opinion too.

Best of luck to you.
