I have had insomnia for almost 11 years now. I have tried literally every pill out there prescribed or over the counter. The only one I haven't tried is lunesta because there is no generic available and I don't want to pay the crazy money for them. I've swapped between many different sleep medications. Right now what seems to be working for me is 2 30mg temezapam and 100mg of Doxepin. Sometimes if that isn't enough I will take half of one my 2mg xanax bars and that usually does it. I never had any success with ambien just made me feel a little weird. Benzos help me a lot just for initially falling asleep as my brain likes to race about everything when I try to go to sleep. Benzos don't last long so as a sleep aid they are usually combined with something else to help keep you asleep.
Hm. My major issue is onset, and the benzos work very well for that. I do wake up in the middle of the night, but I am able to go back to sleep (perhaps due to the Somatomax). Unfortunately, I always awaken early in the morning.

I don't think my psychiatrist would prescribe Soma, but I bet it is less addictive than a benzo, no? I've heard it is effective for sleep.

I'd also like to add that sometimes I fall asleep without the benzo, but it seems like when I don't take them every few days, the insomnia comes back with a vengeance. Weird.
Far less addictive? Debatable. Soma is carisoprodol, a derivative of meprobamate, which definitely is more dependence-causing than benzos. They both act at the GABA-A receptor, and both have established physical withdrawal syndromes.
You would probably get tolerance and rebound insomnia with Soma too.
"Tolerance to the anxiolytic effects (of BZD's) probably does not occur"
Thanks, Audacity. Good to know. Well, I have taken Xanax .5-1mg for the last 3 days. Sleeping like a baby. Last night, I fully intended to go without, but by 1am, I got desperate. I'll lie there, sooooooo tired, and not fall asleep. This is making me lean toward Klonopin, because of the long half life, I don't have to take them daily, and taking something daily scares me, as the Xanax w/d from daily use was awful. But I did get a year of the best sleep I have ever gotten. I wonder if the tolerance and w/ds happened because I was taking a higher dose (1-2mgs) nightly.

But also, I wonder if the lower dose of Xanax daily would be better? Obviously, everything tells me you build a tolerance, but some people don't...
Temazepam for me. Tolerance can be an issue as with most medications but I didn't wake up with the usual alprazolam grogginess. A nice restful sleep. They aren't very popular but for use with insomnia I would definitely recommend them.

I tried them, and at the time, they were too light. However, my pdoc felt that people could be on them for years with no ill side effects and that they continued to work, so I do think about that as an option.
Wow! I took 30mg...and I felt weird and light headed.
