most banks consider it as a cash advance while some banks considers it just as a normal transaction. Its best you call the customer service number behind your card and find out.
All bank visa cards I've ever used, charge you a cash advance fee for
western union transactions. If you have a visa or Mastercard credit/debit
card, and use it as a debit, there would be no cash advance fee.
Also the bank that issues the debit card may need to be contacted by you,
to verify they allow western Union transactions. Those money transfers are considered a high risk for fraudulent use .

so you are charged by both wu and bank? is the bank charge significant? ive never done either. will stick to cc sites and very occasional cvs moneygram batphone.
I have always paid in person and you have to use a debit card or cash. No credit cards allowed when you do it in person. Somebody correct me if I am wrong. I never get any charges from the bank.

Your bank charge will depend on who you bank with and what type of account you have with them (some get more benefits). For a cash advance, some charge a flat fee per transaction, others a percentage of the total cash advance amount, and then there's the interest charge for each day you haven't paid back the money. You'll have to do a little research on your own bank's policies, it's different for everybody.

and i have no intention of ever doing this, but was curious, but it should have gone w/o saying. bloodsucking profiteers, but i love my oil stocks.
CASH!! I don't use banks. I prefer money orders as well to pay bills, small mortgage on the one home that is not paid off is paid for with cash at the bank. Have used an ATM once in my life. Do not care about my credit score as I no longer have any need to borrow money. No assets are in my name so I am also judgement proof. "Control Everything But Own Nothing". Equity strip your R.E. holdings! Do not put cash in Safety Deposit Boxes! Even my vehicle is owned by a New Mexico LLC. Where is the cash? Where it should be.

I've had it show up as just a normal charge (Key bank) and as a cash advance (HSBC). The Cash advance was $8 more (charged by the bank), I think it carriers a higher interest rate as well.

@Keith K Stone , No It's over at my Postal Carrier's Krib. And as far as the GPS unit on my vehicle, my former brother in law (we're still good friends) is a GM & Alfa Romeo mechanic and it's been removed and I backed my truck over it. Any further questions?

Western Union charged me $25 for the transfer even thought it said $15 during the process online and my CC charged me $10. Not cheap but what ya gonna do?
Wow really? I've always just gone into Western Union. I did'nt even know you could do it online? So am I understanding that you can use a Debit and not get charged the fee? I know a CC charges for cash advance but not debit......right? But regardless WU charges for the convenience of course. But damn, $25 seems a bit ridiculous
I'm lazy. I've used western union online since 2008, and limited my transfers to a couple hundred bucks or less, so I've never been rejected or flagged by WU. I use a bank debit/mastercard card. My bank charges me just as if I ordered a DVD on Amazon.
It was a pain in the a$$ to set up though. I had to go into the bank personally and authorize it, and then when I used to use it (past tense) I entered a separate security password in addition to the number and 3-digit security code.
So . . . depends on the bank.
WU keeps records of your transactions, for up to at least 12 months I think from what I've read, whether you go in person or use a credit card online. So unless you use a fake name (and then you risk not getting your money back if your receiver is flagged) it's not exactly safe. Or a good idea. But then. . . sometimes you have no choice.
I hate going in person. Always there is a long line, and sometimes nosey clerks start asking questions about why you're sending money to, e.g., Costa Rica. "Charitable cause or family bla bla bla" . . . I'm a pretty accomplished liar, but I despise lying anymore than I have to. Easier to just point and click.

@Blockhead , you have good ideas about protecting yourself from "sam", Ive done most of that ,but the car ownership in the llc? thats good! You care to elaborate casually on how a brothers friend's sisters mother might set that up. @Keith K Stone you know that if you park that ride in a cave the hidden gps will not transmit, Marine get the slack out!
I wouldnt ever do western union thats a good way to get scammed and have no proof of any kinda credit card purchase that you can totally deny if its not legit
Doesn't Western Union limit the amount you can pull off your account within a certain amount of time? I thought there was a limit of 500 bucks before you had to do some sort of verification. Any time I have tried a WU I always get kicked back and have to call in and do all this verification crap.
