Adderall XR is the extended release form of the drug while Adderrall is th immediate release. The immediate release formulation is indicated for use in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, while the XR formulation is only approved for use in ADHD.

Compared to Adderall, the XR form is composed of 4 different proportions of its active ingredients, allowing it to be metabolized and eliminated at different rates, therefore resulting in a less dramatic onset and termination of therapeutic action. This means less intensity of side effects. Also because of this mechanism, Adderall XR's effectiveness is not altered by food absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.

XR is extended release, I used to use it. I prefer XR because you only need to take it once a day, as opposed to the regular adderal which you have to take one in the morning and one at lunch time
