Does Ritalin need to be prescribed by a psychiatrist or can a medical doctor of general practice do so

I've been having a lot of trouble concentrating lately and I've been thinking about Ritalin as a possible aid, but I don't know if I need to make a special appointment with a psychiatrist or if I can just go see my normal family medical doctor to talk about it.
I know it used to be a psychiatric drug only, but I was wondering if medical doctors now also prescribe it (I have no relationship with a psychiatrist and it would just be so much easier to do it through my family doctor if I could).

I'm not depressed or anything, and I don't feel particularly stressed - it is purely a concentration issue. I've tried getting more sleep, less sleep, more caffeine, less caffeine, more exercise, etc, but nothing seems to work. My mind is just distracted and likes to wander off when I'm about 80% done with something. (Not joking, I've taken more than 20 minutes to write this far into this post already because I keep wandering off.)

I'm in my mid-30's, healthy, smart, and generally wary of drugs as a solution to a problems, but this behavior is very unlike me and I've already tried controlling most of the other variables in my power. I'm starting to get worried that it might negatively impact my job performance (which in this economy, I can't risk). I just want to see if it is a valid solution for giving myself that bump back on the right track, i just don't know who I need to see about it.

Your doctor can prescribe medication but may refer you to a psychiatrist to do an assessment on you. First step is make an appointment with your GP to have a chat.

Ritalin is generally prescribed to young children -- I don't think that is exactly what will help you. Yes, an MD can prescribe, but many do refer you to a mental health out-patient facility.

I think you should talk to your doctor and see what he thinks. Though you say you are not anxious or depressed, I'm more inclined to go with those in regard to your concentration/distraction problems.
