How to interpret tracking number

I took the plunge on 8/9 with an IOP, paid xtra for the expedited 5-7 day shipping (if it even exists, maybe they just scammed me for more $), and finally they shipped out to me on 8/16 and gave me a tracking number that starts with an LY then has nine numbers and ends with a GB. Basically LY000000000GB for example. It doesn't give me any info when I try to track it on USPS tracking and says that it can't be tracked through that site.

Does anybody have any experience with a tracking number like this that could tell me what it means? Where I could look to track it? I've read somewhere that it could be a customs number, which isn't trackable...? Anyhow, it was my first order ever so I don't know what will happen and would really like to!! ;-)

Also, I'm reading a lot about customs and people having stuff sit there for ever before getting a 'love letter'. First ?- what happens when mine gets to customs? And then 2nd ?- is LL a term for my shipment or is it a letter from customs saying mine isnt coming??

I came across a thread that gave a link to tracking packages for this same scenario (i.e. not FedEx or UPS) a while back but i cant remember now where it was. I think if you do a search by post you might find it. It's in here somewhere!! Happy hunting.

LY is International Letter Here is a link from USPS with what the letters in the tracking numbers stand for.
Track & Confirm label ID numbers


The last two letters indicate the country of origin, for example, GB is Great Britain. If your tracking number is LY*****GB, it is a letter coming from Great Britain.

If you get a LL from customs, it is usually to let you know that they have seized your package.

I am waiting on a order with this same type of number and Ive never been able to track it so I have no idea where it is. I emailed the op and they said the number is okay, I decided weeks ago that I just cant track this order and Im just waiting. At least saves me the time of checking the number every day,hour or whatever.

First, try tracking on either Packagetrackr.com or Track-Trace.com, copy and paste your tracking number right up against the margin, since an empty space might not bring up your tracking. Once it shows there, it usually shows up in the USPS system a couple of days later.

WTH? Febuary 2012? My order was shipped 8/28. When I emailed the op the other day they said my tracking number was good. Sooooooo yeah lol

@cinderella thank u so much, this was so helpful. I contacted the sender today and they gave me a little direction but nothing as helpful as yours. I now see that my status is that it has been shipped and in the hands of the ******** carrier that will be delivering it the the united states. I suppose I won't see any updates until it gets logged into USPS system now. So I wait :-)

The sender said I won't see any changes until only a few days before delivery.

One final question... What happens when it gets to customs? Will the tracking show that it is in customs or just show that if it's stuck in customs for seizure?

Looking forward to seeing this process through!!

Well I just got some good news (I think) !? Through a new site I found through Packagetrackr.com which then led me to Usps.ems-tracking.net, my package now says:



Activity Date/Time Location
Processed Through Sort Facility August 19, 2012, 9:48 pm ISC NEW YORK NY(USPS)*

Then I googled a bit on ISC NEW YORK NY(USPS) and have read conflicting info that this is a sort facility after going through customs but some say it is customs and many people still lose pkgs there but interestingly not due to customs seizure but rather due to theft. Hmmmmm

I think this may be the site to keep checking and hope to see movement soon!! I lived in NY so I'm sort of familiar with postal facilities but not this one. I Don't know of it but some say it stands for International Sorting Center.

I shipped express 5-7 business day so I'm expecting faster than usual methods. Could be fooled though.

I'll post an update if I comes and give a review when all said and done of my experience with this company since ts my first ever order

You say I have "O" (Nil) posts. To my certain knowledge, I have posted twice. It may easily be more than that. One problem is that if you are writing just to swell your post number, you are likely to start writing rubbish. Before Bulk Buy Meds started scamming they sent me a tracking number so I will try and track it via Royal Mail as suggested. I am not holding my breath, though!However I will kweep this column posted re any progress made.

I too am a new member but I think you may be showing zero (nil) posts because a post must contain at least 100 characters in order to count towards your statistics for posting. I'm no good at guessing what 100 characters looks like but if you write at least a small paragraph with 3-5 sentences you should be fine. Good luck! :-)

I too wonder where and what Im getting from, I've read (not sure if it is true or not) that if you keep checking on a package tracking # customs can see that it is being checked.
I do know, if it ends in GB it's great britan. I used this website because it checks all shipping companies, hopefully this helps

With the amount of mail that goes through these facilities, I doubt anyone is keeping track of how many times a website is checked. Last night and early this morning, the USPS website wasn't experiencing "Technical difficulties" But I just checked and it is up and running ---- but my letter is still sitting there from the day before yours, Aug 18, making today the 8th day. My last letlterl sat there 8 days as well and another point is that when it did finally update, the actual update had been 24 hours earlier.

@Cinderella1 I noticed the site was down this morning too but I surely wasn't going to recheck after maggymae wrote that about tracking! Lol. I doubt too that customs is checking stuff like that but in light of the delay (that was highly unexpected due to being my first order and actually believing what the shipper told me) I broke down and had to call my dr's office last week for a refill (which I HATE doing because it makes me feel like I am asking for too much) so I haven't had the desperation to get this pkg delivered as bad any more now that I got my script filled locally. I still think I'll decrease my times that I check however :-)

You're not being needy, so don't worry. We all need a little reassurance from time to time.

If you are purchasing from ********, from my experience, expedited shipping means nothing, except on their end. They'll give your letter priority over others who haven't paid for the expedited charges, however, once it gets here, it's going to sit at the international sorting facility until they're ready to move it along.

LY - stands for international letter, which is not express mail or priority mail and you are correct GB is from Great Britain. (by the way, the letter I'm currently waiting on is the same tracking, beginning LY and ending GB)

I just checked the USPS site and it's been updated!!!! WOOOOHOOO!!!

It said Processed through Bethpage sort facility August 26th at 8:27 pm, almost a full 7 days after posting the ISC scan. So it is at least updating. And I just moved To FL a few months ago from the town right next to Bethpage so I KNOW for a fact what that is, just a sort destination to route me onward :-)

I'll keep posting since it seems like we're on the same timeline. Not that any two deliveries are ever the same but maybe it'll be helpful to you... I have learned so much in the past few weeks on this forum and I giVe many props to everyone that took the time to give me advise!!

Yeah mine showed it left bethpage but nothing after that or that it's arrived in my area. Where I live we're still getting soaked by the storm and cars can't even get in or out of my neighborhood! So I took the leisure of calling my local post office to ask the policy on if they'll deliver when the roads are flooded. They said no but they'll come tomorrow. I doubt the water will recede enough by then anyways... The post office said several letter carriers have been calling in that neighborhoods are completely inaccessible so I am definitely not getting mine for a few days at least. Oh well!
