Start a topic describing the mental and psychological reasons you find it difficult to express your opinions.

That should spark something. You can learn something everyday.

This is very important. You can learn from it.

You might not know it, but I became disgusted with attitudes and opinions from members here. I am a rather controversial member. Consider me a shithead. I condescendingly dismiss other members' knowledge and opinions as trash unless they share mine.

    I took a hiatus.

While away, I realized that I don't know everything; it is a humbling experience. I need further education if I'm to maintain conversations with professionals before I can render advice or personal experiences. Finally it occurred to me that I can't be right all the time.

At the advice of the foremost, world's leading expert on alcoholism and addiction, I'm returning to school. I need to educate myself. I need to educate. I need to educate.

This program is self-paced and the average completion requires approximately 12 years of study. The program also requires more credits than similar courses. However, if the student is unable to complete the program in 12 years, additional continuing education credits are available to maintain enrollment but it becomes expensive and federal assistance might be required.

Another area of study is also offered involving a related element in a slightly different subject area that is not within the scope of this course. While a substantial and relevant addition to the material, the professor is not prepared to teach it...........................yet. Reasons are unclear.

Had I not engaged in discussion, I would have never learned this life altering experience.

    I wish you the best.

@emerald - It's ok - you don't have to be an expert in anything but you Your personal experience is something special to be offered. Start with that. As someone new myself I'm enjoying just being welcomed into the community.

Here, I'm a newb too. I'll throw some chum in the water and see if you or anyone else wants to bite!

I got kidney stones when I was 19. I had never had any pain killer before in my life. The pain of that stone was so horrific I seriously thought I was dying. The hospital figured out what was wrong, sent me home to pee it out and loaded me with vicodin.

My parents were there to take care of me and despite 3 pills the pain was so intense and unrelenting my mom kept giving me more. At some point I was rocking back and forth with a garbage can on my lap (hyro puke *lol) and i suddenly lost my vision. Everything was black. I freaked out. Why couldn't I see? My dad went mental and started yelling at my mom that she was gona make me OD. But all I could think about was how much pain I was in and how nothing was helping. It's the only time in my life I've ever wanted to kill myself. I started to cry and beg my mom to just kill.

Hindsight and all - I'm so glad she didn't. LOL

@emerald , set a goal to to make at least one post day, or if you only logon a few times a week then at least 7 or maybe 10 posts a week total. A lot of times I'll log in and just look at the recent posts that have been made. Most of the time you will see something of interest where you can add some information, answer questions, provide a JMHO.... You'll be at 60 in a few weeks.

I'm new at this as well, It has been really helpful to read some of the posts and I can sympathize as well as empathize with many people. This is my first post of what I understand must be a lot and I completely understand why. It is nice to know that there are others out there that go thru some of the same things you experience even though you would never wish your problems on anyone else. I just want to say thanks for having a place to hear other stories.

Yes, if it weren't for @Xzentric 's post about his dhc addiction, I would have never enrolled in my new class.

    Emerald -
And, it's understandable to make people "pay their dues" prior to going to a senior area...however, it's a bummer for someone like me who used to be a VIP on the other board and now I have to start over
    .

All new members start out equal here. The VIP status from the defunct board was a paid status and members didn't have to post anything. It's a new day! I lost track of my friends there, too.
The Freeboard was a frenzy of mostly desperate poor spellers.
There was about 10 members that you could trust for information because they really cared. I can already see there are way more than that in the Senior section here. They are kind and friendly.
It's REALLY important to read as many posts as you can in the areas that interest you because you'll get answers for your questions that are bound to come up later.
Please just give it a try. This is a much calmer site. Good Luck!

If you need to get more posts, I recommend looking in the random /game section. It might seem not that important, but it's a really great way to get to know senior members, moderators, and people who frequent the boards. I think exploring those boards really allowed me to make some friends who have definitely helped in my journey. Happy posting!

Okay, I'm seriously starting to think that these threads are started to either fuel a flame war or they're simply an opportunity for members to earn like or helpful rep points. Maybe I'm just reading too much between the lines/thread/replies...I guess. Rebuttal?

Somebody prove me wrong or right, at best! ;-)

    I can prove anybody wrong.

Where is that skeleton in your closet? If you needed to ask somebody a personal question but were too embarrassed to do it, isn't it just a tad easier behind a computer screen?

Ask something like, "my mom just found out she has ovarian cancer and I'm wondering if anybody here has any personal experience?"

I doubt anybody's going to come back and say, "damn, and she was a good <f word>."

    Got it?

You'll have 50 posts in 2 days just responding to the outpouring of sympathy

Problem is, your post isn't long enough, so you didn't score there.

I'm taking the time to help you, with a serious subject no less, and the gratitude isn't quite right. No score there.

You made a little spark, which starts a flame. Maybe it's an attempt at humor.

@Baldy , I find that by just logging on frequently and reading through as many posts as possible it is relatively easy to find a thread or two that you have either interest in or input to share.

    No, they're really not.

Your postcount remains at zero because your post did not contain at least 100 characters. There are many areas of the board where one can gain the needed posts to see links, receive PMs, or anything else that's restricted based upon postcount. There's even an off-topic humor-type area. Everyone can contribute something.

Everyone /needs/ to contribute something, in my opinion. Message boards are pretty pointless if all you have is people reading and not contributing meaningful information. To some posters, the joke you tell is better than any med they could take at that moment.

    @jwilcox25

The post requirement isn't all that bad and for me, the 1 month wait proved to be more of a frustrating issue! I found myself logging in a little while everyday, reading the threads and posts, contributing and posting, and joining in the discussions. Don't be shy as there are numerous of topics available to add your proverbial "two cents" worth and helpful experiences you can relate. Everyone I've personally encountered since joining in April have been nothing but helpful and insightful (not to mention friendly, including the moderators). If you haven't already be reminded, read and read the posting rules and simply contribute a little each day. That's been my secret and I enjoy logging on every day just to keep up with all the info.

It's really not as hard as it may first appear. Just takes a little time on your end and that frustrating initial wait prior to gaining access to the senior area.

Welcome to PR and please take a look around, get comfortable, and join the community at large. Lots of helpful folks here, I assure you.

    All The Best!

I definitely agree. Blocking people from viewing things if they don't have a certain number of posts just encourages people to post pointless information!
