The top posters list -- keep it or delete it?

@Keith K Stone, At last you have surfaced. I like the new signature but don't worry since it's become a Kentucky Derby of sorts down there you will likely be passed over fairly soon unless you get crackin' (which I don't think you care to do). As the both of us know, it's the column to the right that really reflects a member's profile. What is shocking is when you see a member in the Top Poster's list almost absolute lack of rating other member's posts. There is no reasonable explanation that I personally will accept for that except narcissism.

I noticed I was on the 'top poster' list, but on the bottom. Looked at it again, and now I'm right under @Keith K Stone, so I can't help but think this is directed at me, at least in part. I don't care about my post count. I don't post just to raise it, I can assure you.

Honestly, I haven't been sleeping well for the past couple of weeks. When I can't sleep, I get on PR to occupy myself. I guess I've been on here more often, therefore posting more. If anyone is upset that I am on the list, or my position on it, I will happily request that @drboris remove my name from the list (if possible). It's cool being on there, but it doesn't mean enough to me to have other people ticked off at me about it.

ps: @Blockhead, I completely agree w/ you that the amount of helpful posts are much more important than post count. Also, this post wasn't totally directed at you, because for all I know, there are other people that feel the same way.

Well said, in fact your whole post above I agree with. I'd much rather be on the helpful post list. I don't like being on the top posters list. I keep posting and saying that - it's not helping me, is it?

Lists make me nervous, specially to do lists. LOL@me.

@crucibelle, I don't care about my post count either but I feel that the number of posts that a member has rated as compared with the number their posts that have been rated is probably the most important aspect of all as it IMO gives the newer members a reason to provide more input which can very likely be helpful. It is my understanding that you can still rate over five posts a day but the one's that exceed that number will not raise a members reputation but it will still show them that their post was appreciated. And I think that having that post rated by a Senior Member is of utmost importance. Us Senior Members can go on rating each others post back and forth all the time but I don't think that helps boost the morale of those that are not. BTW, I tried to get drboris to remove my PIPS a few months ago and it was a no go so I would assume the same would be true for lowering one's post count. My post was directed at everybody in the Top Posters's list for the sole purpose of getting them to evaluate the benefit that they are or not actually bringing to this community. I am not ragging on anybody, just letting my observations be known. Also, if you are having trouble sleeping I think that there are more than a few reputable vendors here on PR that can help you resolve that issue. I'll be knocked out cold very soon myself. I love to sleep!

@Blockhead -- Understood, and I agree w/ you completely. I do rate a lot of posts, although I don't think I've rated as many as you. I think I've rated about as many as I've gotten, but I don't pay that much attention to it. When I see a post I like or that I think is helpful (to anyone, not just myself), I rate it. Oh, I am sure there are plenty of vendors that could help me out... the question is, do I really want to start taking all that stuff to sleep? lol Nope, I'd rather just ride it out... I think there is a glitch in the system.
I mentioned this a few weeks ago, but it got overlooked.
Up until around a month ago, my profile was showing that I had rated something like 14 posts, this was impossible..I always give out at least the 5 a day, I haven't checked it recently, but I know that what was showing the other week could not possibly have been accurate.
I was having a look around yesterday at some profiles, and was surprised (or not) at a couple of posters who hadn't even rated a single post.
Fair enough, but those posters had kicked up enough of a fuss about deserving to get into the Sr forum more than everyone else, and expecting rule bending and preferential treatment.
And it's not hard to see that that the content of the 60 posts, was more post filling for the purpose of getting access, and getting those ratings more out of pity, than for there actual content.

I look at ratings received vs. ratings given. If I see someone who has a shit-ton of ratings, but only given out, like... four or something -- then I start thinking 'wow, this person sure is stingy with the ratings.' I've never really thought to compare post count to number of times someone has rated posts, though. Something else to consider, I guess.

Well, my number of ratings is about half my post-count, so I guess I'm not quite as pathologically vain as @jholden40...lol I'm pretty happy with my rating count, though. I already rate so many posts, I don't see how I could possibly rate any more without rating posts that I don't really like, or don't think are helpful. And that just doesn't seem like it would be the right thing to do. I dunno.

I find quite a few posts helpful and/or likable, but other than that, I feel the same way. I don't think it would be right to give somebody a rating if you didn't really consider that particular post helpful or likable.

@jholden40 -- Just to be clear, I don't find anything wrong at all w/ the number of posts you've rated. I rarely pay attention to any of this stuff, until it's brought up (like in this thread).

I'm afraid I don't quite understand @Blockhead's concern. If one was going around begging other members for likes/helpfuls, and then not returning the favour, well, fair enough. In my case, I couldn't give a flying f**k whether someone rates my posts, so it all seems a bit silly

Found it again (meaning your post) If I were you I would pm drboris about your own account. That is weird.

There may be a glitch in the system. Of course, the counting on what one rates is not as important as being rated, but still a glitch is a glitch. If there is glitch, it make turn out to have a larger impact in the receiving of rep. points. Who knows? I don't but I would let drboris know, just in case.

@crucibelle I don't really want to be on the list anymore either, for the reasons that have been discussed (off topic posts shouldn' count, helpful posts more important,....it is also viewable to guests.

I know @Fireplaces doesn't want to be on the list either, she posted it somewhere. So that's 3 out of 9 (excluding @drboris an the two mods on it) that want to be off. Maybe there are more than more than 3, could have missed someones else's post that they want to be off. @Blockhead

I think it makes us targets. Targets of whom, you ask? Anyone who is interested in hurting the board for whatever reason. I also think that list actually keeps folks from posting, as folks don't want to be on it, so they stop posting hoping they will drop down on the list. I don't know that for a fact; just my best guess.

I would rather have the top 10 poster list, just be deleted especially since one does not even need to be logged in to see it. Anyway that could happen?

So with alk that makes 4 of 9 who do not want to be on the top posters list (leaving out admin/mods).

Of course here I am posting again...I had a plan to limt myself to aprox. one post a day and slip off the list over the nest few weeks, now I have 3 posts already for the day. Well at least I'm still below my 3.61 posts/day average.
