I was told by a sleep dr to take 2 xanax a week for sleep walking. But my shrink
says no way!!! Thoughts? I was told that if you take it too long you build up a tolerance and then become addicted to it. I freaked out and haven't seen this sleep doctor since. My shrink said to only take as needed. Is it possible this sleep doctor is just flat out wrong?

It's true that you can build an addiction to certain drugs but if prescribed at a certain amount and taken responsibly, its a slim to zero chance. Your doctor isn't wrong, he has a degree in this field for heaven's sake, take at your own discretion and if you want to or not.

I don't think that taking just 2 Xanax a week will result in tolerance or habit formation. If your doctor prescribed it then I would go ahead and try it. Did your doctor discuss other options like Ambien? If you want something inexpensive and that you can't get addicted to, try Benadryl, an otc sleep aid, or melatonin, a natural supplement. Above all, listen to the real doctor before you take advice from a shrink. If all else fails, then resort to psych doctors.

to be honest i never heard of taking xanax in such a way , and for sleepwalking to boot! dosent make much sense to me...but im no doctor.
i have taken xanax for anxiety in the past and have been very careful with it, yes it is addictive, but if used properly, it works very well.
