Xanax at 31 weeks pregnant
I have been having terrible maritial problems lately and have been very upset. I have decided to seek counseling. The earliest available appointment is Monday.

I have been crying and throw up since my husband and I had a fight last night.

I called my sister to pick up my children and take them for the weekend because I’m an absolute mess.

I just drank a glass and a half of chardonnay and took 2mg of Xanax that girlfriend brought over for me. I’ve never taken this medication before.

I’ve calm down now. I stopped crying and throwing up. My girlfriend left me enough Xanax to get through the weekend until my counseling appoinntment on Monday but now I’m concerned with how this will affect my baby. I’m 31 weeks pregnant.

Please read all of her questions before you reply.

CAT you need to stop doing these horrible things to yourself and your husband. Please at least go to and on-line counselor. As soon as possible this is going the wrong way really fast now.
Throwing up is really bad and you could go into premature labor, and mixing in drugs is not a good thing. You also need to contact a nurse line or an on call doctor.

Xanax is not a good idea during pregnancy. If you take them in the first trimester they're known to cause birth defects. Of course it would be due to someone taking them consistently throughout the first trimester to cause these problems. In the third trimester it should be fine, but I wouldn't take them again. Ask your doctor for anti anxiety meds that are safe during pregnancy, and just stick to a glass or two of wine for now.

Please get a grip. You are responsible for this baby's life. Do not drink or take drugs, how could you and why? I personally have clinical anxiety, severe post traumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety and would never consider taking a medication or using alcohol while pregnant. Get into counseling a.s.a.p. Call a crisis line, check yourself into a mental hospital - whatever it takes before you take matters into your own hands and determine your own treatment plan.

Risk of Fetal Harm
Benzodiazepines can potentially cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women. If XANAX is used during pregnancy, or if the patient becomes pregnant while taking this drug, the patient should be apprised of the potential hazard to the fetus. Because of experience with other members of the benzodiazepine class, XANAX is assumed to be capable of causing an increased risk of congenital abnormalities when administered to a pregnant woman during the first trimester. Because use of these drugs is rarely a matter of urgency, their use during the first trimester should almost always be avoided. The possibility that a woman of childbearing potential may be pregnant at the time of institution of therapy should be considered. Patients should be advised that if they become pregnant during therapy or intend to become pregnant they should communicate with their physicians about the desirability of discontinuing the drug.

You need to stop taking the xanax and you should not be drinking alcohol while pregnant. It can be dangerous for the baby. I have had three babies and would not take anything while I was pregnant not even an aspirin unless I had my doctors permission. You need to let your doctor know about the xanax. If you need anything then you need to have your doctor give you a prescription for something. Hope that the counseling works out for the two of you.

Xanax is very dangerous unless proscribed by your doctor for specific things. Please do not take medication that is not yours. You are endangering yourself and your baby.

Hormones play a bit part in pregnancy. Some women get extremely emotional but your friend should not have 'played doctor'

Go talk to your OB-GYN and and expect a lecture on how foolish you were.
